• Schroeder is currently spearheading two major economic development projects which are dramatically improving conditions in his district, 145. The Buffalo River Project includes the construction of two riverfront parks – one in the historical Old First Ward neighborhood at the mouth of the Buffalo River, and the other upstream in a wooded area in West Seneca. The Seneca Street Redevelopment Project focuses on making physical upgrades to the streetscape on one of his district’s major commercial thoroughfares.
• Schroeder left a successful career in the private sector in 2001 in order to serve the public as a county legislator.
• Schroeder grew up in South Buffalo, attending St. Thomas Aquinas School before graduating from Public School #72 and Bishop Timon High School.
• He earned an Associate’s degree from Erie Community College and a Bachelor’s degree from Empire State College.

• He authored the New York State Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credit which will create significant investment in the historic residential and commercial properties in Buffalo’s distressed neighborhoods.
• He worked on expansion of the New York Main Street Program to provide resources for façade improvements and streetscape enhancements in our business districts.
• He promotes economic opportunity and a better quality of life for the district by supporting comprehensive healthcare, improved public transportation, multi-modal transportation, affordable higher education, and job training/readiness programs.
• He recently introduced the most comprehensive education reform legislation ever introduced in New York. Developing high speed rail in New York State as a way to create economic development is important to Sam, and he serves as co-chair of the Assembly Task Force on High Speed Rail.

About Richard Gottfried

• He was first elected in 1970, at the age of 23.
• Highlights of his legislative work include: the Prenatal Care Assistance Program for low income women; the Child Health Plus Program, which allows low- and moderate-income parents to get free or low-cost health insurance for their children; the Physician Profiling Law, which gives patients access to information about a doctor’s record; Family Health Plus, which provides free health coverage for low-income adults; the Health Care Proxy Law, which allows people to designate an agent to make health care decisions for them if they lose decision-making capacity; simplification of enrollment in publicly-financed programs (such as Medicaid); and the HIV Testing and Confidentiality Law.
• In the Legislature, he has been the leading proponent of patient autonomy, especially in end-of-life care, and reproductive freedom.
• He also sponsors the N.Y. Health bill to create a universal publicly funded health coverage plan for New York State.
• Each year, he has fought successfully to protect and increase funding for Medicaid, school health clinics, HIV/AIDS services, and other health concerns.
